Beaudesert lawyer backing Beauy boxers

AFTER winning gold at the Tri Nation boxing Championships in Auckland, Beaudesert boxers Dylan Biggs and Kalob Gray have secured their future in the sport after Carolyn Buchan from Country to Coast Lawyers on Brisbane Street committed to providing financial support for the next three years.

Ms Buchan said she was happy to play a role in helping the fighters reach their potential.

"These boys need supporting, they have the world at their feet and we need to get behind them," she said.

"The dedication it takes to commit to a sport and do well, especially in regional areas, is quite admirable."

Biggs only found out in September that he would be eligible for the 2020 Olympics and immediately threw himself into training, even sacrificing his formal to fight in new Zealand.

Coach and founder of Beaudesert Boxing Club Justin O'Leary said the club had been well supported by the community but this was the first time a major sponsor stepped up.

"Dylan and Kalob have both won gold at the state titles, national titles, Golden Gloves and now becoming Oceana Champions," he said. "In Auckland, Dylan beat both the New Zealand U19 75 kilogram champion and his Samoan opponent. Kalob won his fight against the Samoan champion and then his opponent withdrew from the second fight."

Mr O'Leary said the club was grateful to Ms Buchan for backing the fighters.

"You can be as good as you want but meat tray raffles at the pub can only get you so far and these boys are at a level where they need more," he said.

"Dylan will go to Melbourne next week to fight in the final Australian leg of the Olympic qualifiers and hopes to compete in the 2020 Games in Japan.

"Kalob is too young for 2020 but the big goal is to get both boys to the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

Mr O'Leary said the sky was the limit with Country to Coast's sponsorship enabling Beaudesert Boxing Club's rising stars to travel to tournaments in Australia and overseas.
